Certified Firefighter Hiring Info

The City of Durham Fire Department plans to offer an Accelerated Fire Academy in mid 2024. We plan to offer two days of testing for applicants who qualify for this academy. All qualified Certified/Lateral Firefighter applicants must pass Physical Agility Testing AND written testing based on the Jones & Bartlett fourth edition of "Fundamentals of Firefighter Skills and Hazardous Materials Response."

  • Work gloves and knee pads are optional
  • Release of Liability Form

Certified/Lateral Firefighter (Starting salary is non-negotiable) $43,825 - $71,388

If you CAN answer "Yes" to the following questions, Durham considers you a Certified/Lateral Firefighter.


  1. Do you have a valid/unexpired NC Basic EMT certification or can you get reciprocity for your current EMT certification?
  2. Do you have an IFSAC or Pro Board Firefighter II certification or can you get reciprocity for your current Firefighter II certification?
  3. Do you have an IFSAC or Pro Board Hazmat Operations Level I certification or can you get reciprocity for your current Hazmat Operations certification?
  4. Have you graduated from an approved Fire Academy AND worked as a government or municipality full-time paid firefighter for at least the past two years without more than a three-month lapse in employment? 

Durham Fire Schedules

  
  • Firefighter Shift Schedule - Our Firefighters work an average of ten 24-hour shifts per month on A, B, or C Shift. Shifts run from 7 am until 7 am the following day. Firefighters work every other day for 10 days. After that 10-day cycle is complete, each firefighter is off for 6 consecutive days.
